CLEVELAND (AP) -- Democrat Dennis Kucinich is abandoning his second, long-shot bid for the White House as he faces a tough fight to hold onto his other job -- U.S. congressman.

In an interview with Cleveland's Plain Dealer, the six-term House member said he was quitting the race and would make a formal announcement on Friday.

"I will be announcing that I'm transitioning out of the presidential campaign," Kucinich said. "I'm making that announcement tomorrow about a new direction." link

Rep. Dennis Kucinich officially ended his yearlong quest for the White House Friday by pledging that his energy will be devoted to winning a seventh term in Congress.

Kucinich made his announcement surrounded by family members and about 50 supporters at the International Laborers' Union hall on Euclid Ave.

The 61-year-old congressman announced the creation of a national organization, Integrity Now, which will continue to push his presidential campaign agenda of ending the war in Iraq.

Kucinich said all the energy that had gone into his presidential campaign could now be "transitioned" to the new group. He gave few details of the organization but said his wife, Elizabeth, would play a major role, and he urged people to visit integritynow.org.

He said that being shut out of presidential debates coupled with a recent meeting with local labor leaders convinced him that it was time to focus on returning to Congress.

He was coy when was asked whether he would introduce on Monday, as he had announced, articles of impeachment against President Bush, the day Bush delivers his State of the Union speech.

Kucinich said he has been working with members of Congress to gain support for the impeachment, and he reminded reporters that an impeachment was just an investigation. He said that 9 of the 23 members of the House Judiciary Committee had indicated support for his investigation of Bush. link

To say that the news about Sen. Kucinich's withdrawl from the U.S. Presidential race is disheartening is a gross understatement. However, I understand and respect his decision. Senator Kucinich will continue to have my full support as it pertains to matters relating to restoration and protection of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The forefathers of our great nation continue to roll in their graves as citizen rights continue to be legislatively stripped. This must end. By whatever means necessary.

Namaste'
